J. Arthur Snoke of Blacksburg, professor of geosciences in College of Science at Virginia Tech, was conferred the "professor emeritus" title by the Virginia Tech Board of Visitors during the board's quarterly meeting August 27.

The title of emeritus may be conferred on retired professors and associate professors, administrative officers, librarians, and exceptional staff members who have given exemplary service to the university and who are specially recommended to the board of visitors by Virginia Tech President Charles W. Steger. Nominated individuals who are approved by the board of visitors receive an emeritus certificate from the university.

A member of the Virginia Tech community since 1977, Snoke served as director of the Virginia Tech Seismological Observatory from 1993 to 1999, and associate director from 1999 to 2007. He made significant contributions to the understanding of plate boundary seismic properties, and published 44 peer-reviewed papers. In addition to his teaching and research responsibilities, Snoke served on Virginia Tech’s Faculty Senate, the University Council, the Commission on Graduate Studies and Policies, and the University Library Committee.

Snoke received his bachelor’s degree from Stanford University and a master’s degree and Ph.D. from Yale University.
