Vickie Akers of Radford, Va., payroll accountant in the Office of the University Comptroller at Virginia Tech, recently received the university's 2008 President's Award for Excellence.

The President’s Award for Excellence is presented annually to up to five Virginia Tech staff employees who have made extraordinary contributions by consistent excellence in the performance of their job or a single incident, contribution, or heroic act. Each recipient is awarded a $2,000 cash prize.

A member of the Virginia Tech community since 1972, Akers has worked in payroll for 33 of the past 35 years.

“She demonstrates a dedication to her job and the university that is uncommon in today’s workforce,” said Kenneth Miller, university comptroller. “Her hard work and dedication have been unwavering over the years and as a result, she is a trusted recourse across campus.”

Akers has experienced multiple payroll system conversions with the progression of technology as related to payroll, and adapted well to the changes and advances as they have occurred, added Miller.

Her position also requires that she stay up-to-date on the regulatory changes related to employment and taxation issued by federal and state agencies. She is often called upon the Human Resources Help Desk to provide assistance with addressing issues related to paying wage and salaried employees.

“Vickie takes her responsibilities in the payroll area very seriously and makes sure that university departments receive the assistance they need to process the payroll for their employees,” said Wendell Vest, associate comptroller and associate bursar. “She is one of the most dedicated employees I have ever had the pleasure of working with.”
