Individual tickets are now available for the Center for the Arts at Virginia Tech’s 2014-15 season performances. From family-friendly offerings and timeless classics to thought-provoking performances and works that bring fresh perspectives, the center’s upcoming performances will be coupled with engagement activities that bring additional opportunities to explore and grow.

The season will open on Sept. 12, with singer, songwriter, and West Virginia-native Kathy Mattea, who will pay homage to her Appalachian heritage through songs and stories. In addition to Mattea, other powerful female voices bring unique and captivating styles to the center’s second season, including jazz vocalist Jane Monheit, contemporary artist Samita Sinha, and Audra McDonald, who recently earned her record-setting sixth Tony Award.  McDonald will present Broadway favorites spanning the decades.

Along with McDonald, the sounds of timeless music will be celebrated by performers including Branford Marsalis, the Australian Chamber Orchestra, and the Roanoke Symphony Orchestra, which returns to the center for three performances.

The season also features innovative professional dance performances from Liz Lerman, the Aspen Santa Fe Ballet, and BeijingDance/LDTX. Authors David Sedaris and George Saunders inject fresh and thoughtful perspectives to the lineup, along with the Kronos Quartet and “The Intergalactic Nemesis,” a performance combining a cast of three actors, live sound effects, music, and projected graphic novel images.

Imago Theatre’s “Frogz” and Cirque Mechanics “Pedal Punk,” bring performances the entire family can enjoy, as well as “The Three Feathers,” a new one-act children’s opera commissioned from composer Lori Laitman by the Center for the Arts at Virginia Tech. The work will celebrate its world premiere at the Moss Arts Center in October.

The Center for the Arts offers opportunities for community members to connect with the center, its visiting artists, and each other, beyond its performances. Engagement events designed to deepen experiences with the arts and artists include master classes, post-performance discussions, and meet the artist events; music on the Moss Arts Center Patio; and opportunities to make connections through exhibitions, photo installations, research presentations, and hands-on activities in the Grand Lobby.

The first visual arts exhibition of the 2014-15 season will open on Thursday, Sept. 25. “Evolving Geometries: Life, Form, and Color” builds on the rich tradition of geometric abstraction. The exhibition features the work of artists Patrick Wilson, Odili Donald Odita, and Manfred Mohr, who take the visual language of line, form, and color in compelling directions.
