Corps alumna Cmdr. Nikki Phelps named Furman game Hokie Hero
Virginia Tech Corps of Cadets alumna Cmdr. Nikki Phelps, U.S. Navy, was selected as the Hokie Hero for the football game versus Furman University. Phelps earned a degree in biochemistry from the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences and a minor in leadership studies from the Virginia Tech Corps of Cadets Rice Center for Leader Development.
The Virginia Tech Corps of Cadets Hokie Hero program started in 2006 by IMG College, honors Virginia Tech Corps of Cadets alumni who are currently deployed. Recipients of this honor are highlighted by Jon Laaser and Mike Burnop during the radio broadcast of Virginia Tech football games, on the Corps of Cadets website and in the Corps Review magazine.
Phelps is deployed for 11 months to Djibouti, Africa, as a member of Combined Joint Task Force-Horn of Africa. She is serving as the Director of the Targeting Division helping the Task Force plan, coordinate, and execute military-to-military training and engagements with our East African partners.
Phelps hails from Colorado Springs, Colorado, and is a Class of 1998 graduate of the Virginia Tech Corps of Cadets. As a senior, she was the Naval ROTC Battalion Commander and the Corps of Cadets Executive Committee Chairman. Phelps says she sends love to her family in Wyoming, her 1998 buddies, and Hokie Nation.
The Furman game celebrates both Corps Homecoming and Military Appreciation Day. The two are celebrated together because so many members of the corps choose to serve the nation in the armed forces after graduation.
