Invasive plant conference in Ethiopia targets 'worst weed of the century'
Scientists have dubbed Parthenium the "worst weed of the century." The invasive weed made its way from the Americas to Africa, Australia, and Asia beginning in the 1970s. Also known as famine weed, Parthenium destroys crops, causes allergic rashes in people, and scars the intestines of animals that eat it.
Dennis Treacy, president of the Smithfield Foundation and a member of the Virginia Tech Board of Visitors, joined researchers and agriculture experts at a Virginia Tech-led workshop in Dire Dawa, Ethiopia, to learn how scientists plan to control the aggressive spread of this dangerous weed.
