Danú brings a mix of traditional Irish music and new repertoire for St. Patrick's celebration
Join one of the world’s leading traditional Irish ensembles for a high-energy St. Patrick’s celebration, filled with an illustrious mix of ancient Irish music and new repertoire. From Ireland’s historic County Waterford, Danú will perform at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday, March 19.
Presented by the Center for the Arts at Virginia Tech, the performance will be held in the Anne and Ellen Fife Theatre, located within the Moss Arts Center’s Street and Davis Performance Hall at 190 Alumni Mall.
Danú will lead audience members on a rousing musical journey through Ireland in a performance of musical arrangements by the ensemble that embrace Irish musical traditions, which are classified based on their rhythms and include songs, jigs, slides, reels, waltzes, marches, and hornpipes. The ensemble features virtuosi players on flute, tin whistle, fiddle, button accordion, bouzouki, and vocals (Irish and English).
For over two decades, Danú has performed around the world and recorded seven critically acclaimed albums. Winners of numerous awards from the BBC and Irish Music Magazine, Danú has toured throughout Europe, the Middle East, and North America with stops at the Hollywood Bowl in Los Angeles and Symphony Space in New York City, along with major concert engagements in the United Kingdom, India, Israel, and across Europe. Danú’s popular recordings are available on the Shanachie label, and live performances are often broadcast on NPR, the CBC, and the BBC.
Prior to the performance, beginning at 6 p.m., enjoy original music by Jim Sharkey, an Irish folk musician who was born in Ireland and now lives in Roanoke, Virginia, during a free performance in the Moss Arts Center Cube. Tickets
Tickets are $25-55 for general public and $10 for students and youth 18 years old and under. Tickets can be purchased online; at the Moss Arts Center's box office, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Monday through Friday and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday; or by calling 540-231-5300 during box office hours.
Parking is available in the North End Parking Garage on Turner Street. Virginia Tech faculty and staff possessing a valid Virginia Tech parking permit can enter and exit the garage free of charge. Limited street parking is also available. Parking on Alumni Mall is free on weekdays after 5 p.m. and on weekends.
