Special Olympics hot dog luncheon fundraiser set for May 16

On May 16, the hot dog fundraiser will be held from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Public Safety Building.

Students, employees, and community members are invited to attend the Virginia Tech Police Department's annual hot dog luncheon on May 16. The event, which will be held at the Public Safety Building from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., benefits Special Olympics Virginia.

Each $5 meal includes two hot dogs, chips, dessert, and a drink. Additional items may also be purchased separately.

On average, the luncheon raises about $3,000 for Special Olympics Virginia events such as the Law Enforcement Torch Run, which Virginia Tech and Blacksburg Police Departments participate in each June.

Parking is available in the Southgate and Coliseum lots (with the appropriate parking permit). Individuals can also ride BT to the Coliseum stop.

Volunteers from across the university donate the individually wrapped baked goods to complete the meals. During the event, volunteers also help roll, bun, and wrap the hot dogs as they are made.

This is one of several events the Police Department hosts each year to raise money for charitable causes.

In October, the department held a 24-hour relay to raise funds for charity. Ten officers participated, raising more than $4,200 for the Commonwealth of Virginia Campaign general fund, which helped various local charities. 

The department also sells candy bars throughout the year to benefit Special Olympics Virginia.
