Rui Qiao awarded John R. Jones III Faculty Fellowship in Mechanical Engineering

Rui Qiao, associate professor of mechanical engineering and director of the Laboratory of Transport Phenomena for Advanced Technologies in the College of Engineering at Virginia Tech, has been awarded the John R. Jones III Faculty Fellowship in Mechanical Engineering by the Virginia Tech Board of Visitors.

The Jones Faculty Fellowship was established in 2006 to acknowledge and reward mid-career faculty who have shown exceptional merit in research, teaching, and/or service. Jones, a member of the Class of 1967 who earned his bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering, is a retired executive of American Electric Power. He has been a member of the Department of Mechanical Engineering Advisory Board since 1998.

Recipients hold the title of Jones Faculty Fellow for a period of five years.

A member of the Virginia Tech faculty since 2014, Qiao's research focuses on fluid dynamics in heat transfer. His research also investigates thermodynamics, bioelectrochemical systems, multiphase flows, phase-change, and interfacial electrohydrodynamics.

The impact of his work can be seen in the high number of citations his papers have received. He is also a member of two professional journal editorial boards and a guest editor for a third.

In the classroom, Qiao has graduated two master’s degree and five Ph.D. students, three of whom have gone on to faculty positions and one of whom is currently doing postdoctoral work at Argonne National Laboratory. He currently has six Ph.D. students at Virginia Tech.

Qiao has received awards for his teaching at Clemson University, including an Undergraduate Advising Award in 2009, an Excellence in Teaching Award in 2009, and excellence awards in both research and teaching in 2012.

He is a member of the American Physics Society, the American Society of Mechanical Engineers, and the American Chemical Society.

Qiao received his Ph.D. in mechanical engineering from the University of Illinois and his master’s degree in thermal engineering from Tsinghua University.
