Women's Month 2006 to include a tribute concert to women composers
Virginia Tech will commemorate Women’s Month 2006 in March with a variety of events and programs. Festivities will include a special concert to be held Wednesday, March 1 at 8 p.m. in the Squires Student Center Recital Salon. This concert will pay tribute to 400 years of women composers by featuring performances by Virginia Tech faculty, students, and guests. Admission to the concert is free, though a free-will donation will be taken to support the work of the Women's Resource Center of the New River Valley.
The theme of Women’s Month 2006, “Voices and Visions: Building an Inclusive Community,” celebrates the one-year anniversary of the signing of Virginia Tech's Principles of Community.
The Principles of Community are a set of principles adopted by the Virginia Tech community that are fundamental to our ongoing efforts to increase access and inclusion and to create a community that nurtures learning and growth for all of its members. “The Women’s Center at Virginia Tech coordinates the calendar for Women’s Month events. Our goal for this year was to line-up a variety of engaging events aligned with the Virginia Tech Principles of Community,” said Anna LoMascolo, assistant director for programming at the Women’s Center at Virginia Tech
Women’s Month events focus on a variety of gender issues and include a self defense demonstration, an interactive workshop on depression, an Appalachian storytelling event, and an evening with the Virginia Opera, among others. Women's Bootprints Through Time, a display honoring women of the military, will be open to the public in the War Memorial Chapel through the month of March. Women's Month programming is a university-wide series of events designed to recognize the accomplishments, concerns, and diversity of women's lives. All events are open to all who wish to participate in the celebration and exploration of women’s issues. Women’s Month addresses the achievements of women, as well as the challenges women face. Women’s Month also provides the community with the opportunity to examine the ways in which we think about others and ourselves.
Women's Month is a non-profit community project funded by Virginia Tech, area organizations, student groups, local businesses, and citizen contributions. It involves the combined effort of students, faculty, staff, and administrators at Virginia Tech, as well as activists, residents, and civic leaders in the surrounding communities. Women's Month is an annual event occurring in March, National Women's History Month.
