Virginia Tech Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer James A. Hyatt has announced the appointment of Mel Bowles, Jr. as the university's acting director of internal audit, effective immediately.

Bowles has served as associate director of internal audit since 1998. Prior to coming to Virginia Tech, he oversaw the audit function for Dominion Bankshares.

In making the appointment, Hyatt said, “Mr. Bowles's 30 years of audit experience, as well as his project management skills, provide him with the qualifications to serve in this role.”

As interim director of internal audit, Bowles will continue the coordination of university audit activities, direct departmental technical and administrative functions, and provide leadership for departmental responsibilities.

Bowles replaces John Rudd who served as director of internal audit since 2000 and was recently named to the position of director of financial planning in the Office of Budget and Financial Planning.

A full search for a permanent director is expected to be named by in early 2008. Tom Kaloupek, director of materials management, will serve as chair of the search committee.
