The second annual 3.2-Mile Run in Remembrance will be among the many events to be a part of Virginia Tech's 2010 Day of Remembrance on Friday, April 16, 2010.

The event will start at 8 a.m. rain or shine on Alumni Mall near the North Main Street entrance of campus and finish on the Drillfield near the April 16th Memorial. Participants may run or walk and there is no cost to participate in the event.

This year’s 3.2-Mile Run in Remembrance route will be different from last year’s; the new route will be posted online prior to the event. The route will primarily be on pathways and roads but will include an unpaved section as well. A balloon release (using environmentally safe balloons and strings) will signal the start of the event, and runners and walkers will be in separate groups at the start line to ensure a smooth start.

At the conclusion of the event, at 9:30 a.m., all participants are invited to be part of the "3.2 for 32" group photo on the Drillfield near the April 16th Memorial and stay for a post-race picnic.

Pre-registration for participants for the event is strongly encouraged. Visit the Virginia Tech Recreational Sports website to register. Walk-up registration will be available the morning of the event. Check in for pre-registered and walk-up participants will begin at 6 a.m. on the lawn in front of Shultz Dining Center near Alumni Mall. The first 4,000 people to register online will receive a commemorative T-shirt.

More than 300 volunteers are needed to hold this event. Volunteers may register online at the Virginia Tech Recreational Sports website. There are a variety of shifts available including pre-race preparations, set-up, registration, route monitors, community picnic, water station, and post-race clean-up. Shifts are available for those who would like to volunteer and run/walk the 3.2 miles. All volunteers will receive a commemorative T-shirt.

Free parking will be available in the Perry Street parking lot. Parking is available in the Perry Street/ Prices Fork Parking lot located at the Prices Fork intersection with West Campus Drive and the intersection with Stanger Street. Find a campus parking map online or call (540) 231-3200 for more information.

The 3.2 Mile Run in Remembrance is hosted by the Office of Recovery and Support, the Department of Recreational Sports, and the Student Planning Committee comprised of representatives from the Student Government Association, Graduate Student Assembly, Residence Hall Federation, Virginia Tech Union, Virginia Tech Corps of Cadets, Asian American Student Union, Students for Non-Violence, The Council of International Student Organizations, Panhellenic Council, Student Alumni Associates, Interfraternity Council, and the Virginia Tech Board of Visitors Undergraduate Representative.
