Virginia Tech students and the Blacksburg community are teaming up to throw a tailgate party on April 24 to raise money for reliefs efforts in Haiti and to celebrate the university’s and town’s spirit of service.

The Ut Prosim Tailgate will take place from 4 to 8 p.m. on Draper Road and Market Square Park in Blacksburg. Admission is free and open to the public.

Activities will include live entertainment, a spirit rally, T-shirt drive, fundraising raffle, silent auction, food vendors, beer and wine garden, games for students and families, and displays by university and community service organizations.

The event is sponsored by Hokies United™, Downtown Blacksburg Inc., Virginia Tech Student Government Association, Student Alumni Associates of the Virginia Tech Alumni Association, Main Street Inn, and VT-ENGAGE.

Proceeds from the Ut Prosim Tailgate will be donated to Partners in Health, a relief organization that has been working in Haiti for more than 20 years.

“This tailgate will be a great opportunity to raise money and awareness for the people of Haiti,” said Christopher Cooke, a member of the Hokies United student volunteer group and the lead organizer of the tailgate event. “It’s also an excellent opportunity for Virginia Tech students to interact with alumni, faculty, staff, and local merchants and residents.”

In addition, Cooke said, “this event is personally important to me as an organizer because I truly believe in living by our university’s motto of Ut Prosim (That I May Serve).”
