Virginia Tech’s Panhellenic Council is hosting its annual Oak Lane Trick-or-Treat on Friday, Oct. 28, from 4-7 p.m. The event is free and open to local children and their families.

Volunteers from the council, which serves as the elected governing body for the university’s 12 National Panhellenic Conference sororities, will guide families through the on-campus fraternity and sorority housing community, with members of the Oak Lane organizations handing out candy at each house. There will also be games, arts and crafts, and a haunted house.

Registration is necessary in order to attend. Students attending local elementary schools may register through their school. Local families may bring other children 12 and under to the event, but they will need to fill out a registration form and return it to Virginia Tech’s Fraternity and Sorority Life office. Registration forms can be printed out from the council’s website.

The registration deadline is Friday, Oct. 21.

The event has become a popular attraction for the community, with more than 400 children participating last year. Panhellenic Council Director of Community Outreach Kelsey Borchers of Virginia Beach, Va., a senior majoring in interdisciplinary studies in the College of Liberal Arts and Human Sciences, said it is a good opportunity for children and their parents to see the positive side of fraternity and sorority life and for the council to show its appreciation for the community.

“I feel like Greeks aren’t really portrayed how they should be, and the good they do for the community isn’t really at the forefront when people think of fraternities and sororities,” she said. “I think this is a great way to give back to the community and show them what we’re really all about.”

Parking is available from 7 a.m.-5 p.m. in the Oak Lane Community lot. After 5 p.m., free parking is available in the Oak Lane Community lot. Borchers said visitor’s passes are not necessary for parking for this event. Find more parking information online or call 540-231-3200.
