Sherri Cook of Blacksburg has been named senior associate director for finance and administration at the Virginia Tech Carilion Research Institute.

In her new position, Cook will provide leadership for the institute’s financial and administrative operations. She will develop and implement financial, administrative, and personnel policies and procedures; manage the institute’s annual operating budgets; and review, update, and improve risk management measures.

“We are very fortunate to have someone with Sherri’s experience and sophistication in the financial management of research grants and deep knowledge and familiarity with Virginia Tech operations,” said Michael Friedlander, executive director of the Virginia Tech Carilion Research Institute. “Sherri’s strong understanding of federal research grants, policies, and procedures and wonderful track record of working with Virginia Tech investigators makes her just the right person to help guide the institute’s dynamic and rapidly growing programs.”

A member of the Virginia Tech community since 1995, Cook held the positions of director of finance at the Virginia Tech Transportation Institute for nearly 11 years. For two years of that time, she also served as chief financial officer of the Virginia Tech-affiliated National Tire Research Center in Alton, Va. From 1995 to 2001, she served as financial manager at Virginia Tech’s Software Technologies Lab.

Cook, a certified public accountant, received her master of business administration degree from Virginia Tech and a bachelor’s degree in accounting and management from Bluefield State College.
