July 26, 2012
Angela D. Simmons has been appointed director of student conduct at Virginia Tech.
Reporting to the associate vice president for student affairs, Simmons will guide a learning-centered program responsible for leading students in decision making that honors the behavioral expectations of Virginia Tech.
In addition, she will provide vision, strategic direction, and support for a full-time staff of six who collectively resolve approximately 2,000 cases of alleged misconduct annually.
She succeeds Frances Keene, who was recently appointed chief of operations for five units within the Division of Student Affairs as well as deputy to Associate Vice President for Student Affairs Frank Shushok Jr.
“Ms. Simmons brings with her a well-developed philosophy that views the student conduct process from a learning-centered perspective and has an excellent record of building strong relationships with students, faculty, and staff,” Shushok said.
Simmons comes to Virginia Tech from Millersville University in Millersville, Pa., where she holds the role of director of the Center for Student Involvement and Leadership. Prior to her tenure in Millersville, she served as assistant dean of students at Florida State University.
She holds a bachelor’s degree and master's degree from Mississippi State University. Simmons is expected to complete her doctorate in higher education at Florida State University next year
“I'm thrilled to have the opportunity to join the Office of Student Conduct team and the Division of Student Affairs. I believe that the work the office does with and for students is vital to supporting the educational mission of the university,” Simmons said. “I very much look forward to working with and learning from the staff and students at Virginia Tech and continuing to provide a student conduct process that embraces personal growth and development.”
