Dean Rich Sorensen is retiring from his position as dean of the Pamplin College of Business after many years of service to the university.

As part of the interview and selection process for the next dean, Senior Vice President and Provost Mark McNamee invites all members of the campus community to meet the candidates selected for a campus interview. University and community members will be invited to attend each candidate’s open forum presentation on “The Vision for a Business College at a Large Public Comprehensive Land-Grant Research University.” A reception will be held following the open forum presentation.

Each candidate’s curriculum vitae and survey links to provide feedback will be posted on the Office of the Senior Vice President and Provost website in advance of each visit date. The search committee encourages all campus and community members to submit feedback via the online surveys.

Robert T. Sumichrast, dean of the Terry College of Business and Simon S. Selig, Jr. Chair for Economic Growth at the University of Georgia, will interview at the Northern Virginia Center on Wednesday, Dec. 5, and will interview in Blacksburg Dec. 6 and 7.

  • Sumichrast will present at an open forum on Thursday, Dec. 6, from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. at Latham Ballroom B, The Inn at Virginia Tech and Skelton Conference Center, with a reception following from 4:30 to 5 p.m.

Sumichrast joined the University of Georgia as dean in 2007. He was previously dean of the E.J. Ourso College of Business and Ourso Distinguished Professor of Business at Louisiana State University.  He has also served as a faculty member and then associate dean for Graduate and International Programs in the Pamplin College of Business at Virginia Tech.  

Sumichrast remains active as a consultant, editorial reviewer and board member, is an active member of the Decision Sciences Institute, and serves on AACSB (Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business) International’s board of directors. 

He received a Ph.D. in management science from Clemson University.
