Gary C. Shapiro to lead human resources for the Division of Student Affairs

Gary C. Shapiro has been named associate director of administration for human resources for the Division of Student Affairs at Virginia Tech.
He began his new position Jan. 30. He succeeds Samuel L. Camden who retired in August after 15 years with the university.
Shapiro most recently worked as a human resources business consultant at Strategic Human Resources in the Washington, D.C. area.
“Gary Shapiro comes to student affairs with significant experience in human resource management," said Patty Perillo, vice president of student affairs. "His expertise includes talent acquisition, building best practice initiatives, and employee relations. We are very pleased to have someone of Gary’s caliber join our team.”
A parent of two recent Virginia Tech graduates, Shapiro said “I am both honored and thrilled to have this opportunity to continue my career at this wonderful university, while supporting the Division of Student Affairs’ mission and its exceptional student focus and level of caring.”
As associate director of administration for human resources, Shapiro will provide leadership to a team of human resource professionals serving the 15 departments in the Division of Student Affairs, with over 3,300 employees, including 758 faculty and staff, and more than 2,500 wage employees.
Shapiro received his bachelor’s degree in industrial and labor relations from Cornell University.
He brings more than 16 years of human resource management experience to Virginia Tech. Prior to his work at Strategic Human Resources, Shapiro was director of human resources at One Economy Corporation in Washington, D.C., and served in human resources leadership roles in other Washington-area association, telecommunications, and high tech industries. His experience encompasses functional audits and assessments, strategic recruitment and onboarding, compensation and benefits solutions, performance management, organizational analysis, and workforce planning.
Shapiro is a member of the Society for Human Resources Management (SHRM), Human Resources Association of the National Capital Area, and Northern Virginia SHRM.
