Deborah Cook named Verizon Professor in Business Information Technology
Deborah Cook, professor of business information technology in the Pamplin College of Business at Virginia Tech, has been named the Verizon Professor in Business Information Technology by the Virginia Tech Board of Visitors.
What is now the Verizon Professorship in Business Information Technology (formerly Management Science) was established in 1983 to recognize the collaborative relationship between Verizon and the Pamplin College of Business. It is given to recognize teaching and research excellence.
Cook is recognized as an outstanding teacher and researcher. Her research has focused on the development and implementation of techniques to facilitate process improvement within business and manufacturing settings. She has authored more than 40 publications in some of the leading peer-reviewed journals in the fields of management science, operations management, and information technology, including the Transactions of IIE, Decision Science, and the European Journal of Operational Research.
Cook serves as editor-in-chief of Production & Inventory Management (a journal published by APICS The Association for Operations Management) and has served as an associate editor for Engineering Applications of Artificial Intelligence. Cook has served on review panels for the National Science Foundation, U.S. Department of Agriculture, and the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada. She also served as a member of the planning committee for the 2012 APICS Academic Conference and has served various roles within the Decision Sciences Institute and the Production and Operations Management Society.
In her 20 years at Virginia Tech, Cook has served on 23 graduate committees throughout the university, and has taught seven different courses in the Department of Business Information Technology. She is a recipient of the Business Information Technology Teaching Award and the Pamplin College of Business Certificate of Teaching Excellence Award.
Cook received her bachelor’s degree and master’s degree from Virginia Tech and a Ph.D. from Texas A&M University.
