Virginia Tech has partnered with Zipcar Inc., a leading car sharing network, to offer a car sharing program on the Blacksburg campus.

The program will provide a sustainable and cost effective alternative to car ownership on campus.

This campus transportation option is available to students, faculty, and staff 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Students, faculty and staff must be 18 years of age or older to use the service, residents from the local community must be 21 and over.

Four vehicles, including a Toyota Prius, Ford Hatchback, Nissan Sentra and Honda CR-V, will be available for use. Two vehicles will be located along the Drillfield, and two more will be parked in the Squires Lot.

This year, Virginia Tech members can join for a $25 annual membership fee, with rates on campus Zipcar vehicles starting at $7.50 per hour and $69 per day.

After the first year, members will pay an annual membership fee of $35. Gas, insurance, reserved parking spots and up to 180 miles of driving per day are included in Zipcar rates. Cars may be reserved for as little as an hour or for multiple days.

Virginia Tech students, faculty, and staff can sign up for the Zipcar program online.

Participating members with smartphones, including iPhones and Android devices, may download the Zipcar mobile application to make reservations, lock, and unlock the vehicles and honk the horn to help locate the vehicle.

Reservations can also be made over the phone or on Zipcar’s website.

Zipcar has established partnerships with more than 300 universities across North America. Transportation and Campus Services manages the program at Virginia Tech
