James O. Hicks Jr., professor of accounting and information systems in the Pamplin College of Business at Virginia Tech, has been conferred the title of “professor emeritus” by the Virginia Tech Board of Visitors.

The title of emeritus may be conferred on retired professors and associate professors, administrative officers, librarians, and exceptional staff members who are specially recommended to the board of visitors by Virginia Tech President Charles W. Steger. Nominated individuals who are approved by the board of visitors receive an emeritus certificate from the university.

A member of the Virginia Tech community since 1976, Hicks was a pioneer in accounting information systems. He published the first book in this area and in doing so, brought significant recognition to Virginia Tech.

In addition, he has published numerous books and peer-reviewed journal articles in both academic and practice-related publications and peer-reviewed proceedings in the information systems area.

As a member of the faculty in the Department of Accounting and Information Systems, and its predecessor, the Department of Accounting, Hicks taught both undergraduate and graduate level courses. He served on numerous dissertation committees, led 12 study abroad programs, and oversaw many student independent study projects.

Hicks received his bachelor’s degree, master’s degree, and doctoral degree from Georgia State University.
