Virginia Tech Corps of Cadets alumnus 1st Lt. Nathan Bier, U.S. Army who earned a degree in history from the College of Liberal Arts and Human Sciences and a minor in leadership studies from the Virginia Tech Corps of Cadets Rice Center for Leader Development in 2011 has been selected as the Hokie Hero for the Homecoming game versus North Carolina.

The Virginia Tech Corps of Cadets Hokie Hero program started in 2006 by IMG College and sponsored by the University Bookstore, honors Virginia Tech Corps of Cadets alumni who are currently deployed. Recipients of this honor are highlighted by Bill Roth and Mike Burnop during the radio broadcast of Virginia Tech football games, on the Corps of Cadets website and in the Corps Review magazine.

Bier is currently stationed at a Command Outpost in the Wardak Province of Afghanistan, where he serves as a platoon leader in the Third Infantry Division. He is from Macon, Ga., and this is his first combat deployment.

Bier is a Class of 2011 graduate of the Virginia Tech Corps of Cadets and he served as the Charlie Company Commander and 3rd Battalion Commander his senior year. He was also a member of Ranger Company who in a Homecoming tradition ran the game ball for 100 miles this week and presented it to the officials before the game.

Nathan says he sends his love to his wife Erin and to his family and friends all over the world. He would also like to thank everyone who has ever served in the armed forces.
