Event to serve as a resource for those with eyes on a career in health care

January 2, 2014

Jan. 6 update: Because of the anticipated extreme weather conditions, the Within Reach program has been rescheduled for Thursday, Jan. 9 from 6-8 p.m. at the Virginia Tech Carilion School of Medicine.

“A career in health care? Me?” You may have heard those skeptical words from your teenager or even spoken them yourself.

A special program to be hosted by the Virginia Tech Carilion School of Medicine and the Jefferson College of Health Sciences – in partnership with Virginia Western Community College – is designed to introduce participants to various health care careers, provide information on the admission process, and help them understand that health care careers are within their reach.

The event, Within Reach, will be held Tuesday, Jan. 7 from 6:30 to 8 p.m. at the Virginia Tech Carilion School of Medicine at 2 Riverside Circle in Roanoke. An informational fair will start at 6 p.m.

“It’s not uncommon for individuals who may be interested in a health care career to feel like such a dream is not within their grasp for whatever reason,” said Dr. David Trinkle, associate dean for community and culture at the Virginia Tech Carilion School of Medicine. “We are holding Within Reach to dispel some of the preconceived notions people may have and encourage them to take a serious look at whether a health care career might be right for them.”

During the program, school representatives will highlight more than 30 academic programs, including those that lead to a certificate in surgical technology, an associate degree in such fields as occupational therapy assistant, a bachelor’s degree in a range of fields, a master’s degree in such fields as nursing, or a medical degree. Participants will learn about admission requirements, how to prepare academically, and the basics of financial aid, among other things. Ample time will be available to ask questions or speak with school representatives afterward.

Within Reach is geared toward high school and college students and early- and mid-level professionals. Family members, teachers, school counselors, military personnel, and community and church leaders are also encouraged to attend.

The Virginia Tech Carilion School of Medicine offers a four-year, problem-based-learning medical degree program that ensures a solid foundation in basic and clinical science, development of clinical skills, and experiences in all the major clinical disciplines.

In addition, information will be available about a newly formed Virginia Tech doctoral program that offers students the opportunity to earn a Ph.D. in translational biology, medicine, and health.

Within Reach is a free event, and no advance registration is required. Free parking is available in the nearby lot and garage. In the case of inclement weather, the program will be moved to Thursday, Jan. 9. A decision to postpone will be made based upon the schedule for Roanoke City Public Schools.
