Cathy Grimes has been named communications manager for the Graduate School at Virginia Tech.

In this new position, Grimes will oversee a comprehensive communications program supporting the Graduate School and graduate education at all Virginia Tech campus locations. She will oversee the Graduate School's website, blogs, and social media efforts and support graduate student recruitment. She also will work with Vice President and Dean of Graduate Education Karen DePauw on other graduate education initiatives.

Prior to coming to Virginia Tech, Grimes spent 20 years as a reporter, editor, and project coordinator at several  news organizations. Her most recent journalism post was with the Daily Press Media Group in Newport News, Virginia, where she worked for eight years as a team leader and education and government reporter. She also worked closely with the Daily Press social media team.

Before working with the Daily Press, Grimes studied education policy, ethics and governance as a Nieman Fellow at Harvard University, and worked as a journalist for the Seattle Times Company. She also has worked as an editor and writer for several technology companies and government agencies. 

As a long-time member of the Education Writers Association, Grimes has served on that organization's national board of directors and on its journalism advisory committee.

Grimes received her bachelor's degree from the University of Washington.
