Brian Thorsett has been appointed an assistant professor in the School of Performing Arts at Virginia Tech’s College of Liberal Arts and Human Sciences.

Thorsett is one of 27 new tenure-track faculty members at the college this fall. The new hires are part of the college’s ongoing efforts to attract renowned scholars to strengthen and expand its teaching, research, and engagement programs. The college has added more than 100 full-time permanent faculty members in the past four years.

Thorsett’s research interests include the standard operatic, oratorio, and recital repertory with emphasis on the commissioning and performing of new works for tenor voice and chamber ensemble. He will teach applied voice classes.

Thorsett has recorded with New Trinity Baroque and the Philharmonia Baroque Orchestra. He is a graduate of the San Francisco Opera Center’s Merola Program, Glimmerglass Opera Young Artists Program, Music Academy of the West, and Britten-Pears Young Artist Programme.

Thorsett holds a Master of Music degree from the San Francisco Conservatory of Music, and two bachelor's degrees from Santa Clara University.
