The young artists company of the Ash Lawn Opera will perform a semi-staged concert performance of one of the most beloved and performed operas in the world, Puccini’s “Madama Butterfly,” at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday, June 27.

Presented by the Center for the Arts at Virginia Tech, the performance will be held in the Anne and Ellen Fife Theatre, located within the Moss Arts Center’s Street and Davis Performance Hall at 190 Alumni Mall.

Premiering in 1904, “Madama Butterfly” is a tale of all-consuming love and betrayal.  Set in a rapidly modernizing Japan at the turn of the 20th century, the opera follows the passionate yet heartbreaking story of the relationship between Japanese geisha girl Cio-Cio-San (Butterfly) and U.S. Navy Lieutenant B.F. Pinkerton. “Madama Butterfly” has inspired countless other works on the stage and television, as well as in music in film.

Puccini’s masterpiece is brought to life by an energizing roster of young performers. This semi-staged, costumed production with piano accompaniment is emotionally gripping, even after the final, tragic notes have been sung.

For more than 37 years, the Ash Lawn Opera has produced opera and other musical performances in Charlottesville, Virginia. The company provides a wide range of educational programs for youth and adults, as well as professional training for emerging artists.
