Virginia Tech Corps of Cadets alumnus Maj. Scott Porter, U.S. Army, who earned a degree in international studies from the College of Liberal Arts and Human Sciences and a minor in leadership studies from the Virginia Tech Corps of Cadets Rice Center for Leader Development was selected as the Hokie Hero for the football game versus the University of North Carolina.

The Virginia Tech Corps of Cadets Hokie Hero program started in 2006 by IMG College, honors Virginia Tech Corps of Cadets alumni who are currently deployed. Recipients of this honor are highlighted by Jon Laaser and Mike Burnop during the radio broadcast of Virginia Tech football games, on the Corps of Cadets website and in the Corps Review magazine.

Porter is on his third deployment to Afghanistan, this time to Kabul for a year, in support of Operation Resolute Support.  He is an infantry officer and is serving as the Foreign Military Sales Ground Chief for the Security Assistance Office.

Porter and his team work every day to support the Ministries of Defense and Interior to train and equip the Afghan National Army, Police, Special Operations Forces, and Air Force in order to build security capacity and stability for the people and government of Afghanistan.

He is from McLean, Virginia, and is a Class of 2000 graduate of the Virginia Tech Corps of Cadets.  As a cadet, he served as the 2nd Battalion Executive Officer, served as cadre, and was a member of the Scabbard and Blade Military Honor Society.

Porter says he sends his love to his family, his wife, U.S. Army Maj. Autumn Porter, and their daughters, Sienna and Taylor.  Also, a big shout out to his fellow Hokie brother, U.S. Army Capt. Dennis Porter, a 2008 Corps of Cadets graduate, to the Corps of Cadets, and the Hokie Nation. Go Hokies and thank you Coach Frank Beamer from all our Hokie alumni and the Corps of Cadets!
