From books on sustainable building systems and terrorism in Nepal, to articles on insulin resistance and populations at risk for dropping out of school, the work of Virginia Tech authors will be recognized and celebrated at the eleventh annual Virginia Tech Authors recognition event.

The Virginia Tech community is invited to attend the reception and book display honoring university authors who published in 2015. The event begins at 4:30 p.m. on Feb. 29 in the Newman Library Multipurpose Room at 560 Drillfield Drive in Blacksburg. Hors d'oeuvres, refreshments, celebration, and conversation will follow a short program.

“Virginia Tech has such prolific faculty contributing incredible work to the academic community,” said Tyler Walters, dean of University Libraries. “This event allows us to bring together Provost Thanassis Rikakis and university leadership to thank our authors for their groundbreaking work and reflect on Virginia Tech’s ever-growing impact on global research."

Hosted by the University Libraries, the annual Virginia Tech Authors recognition event provides an opportunity for the community to view Virginia Tech’s contributions to academic, creative, and cultural scholarship. The authors’ books are displayed at the event and added to the libraries’ collections.

Authors who published in open access journals through the university’s Open Access Subvention Fund will also be recognized. The subvention fund supports authors who wish to publish in open access journals by covering processing fees, allowing faculty, staff, and students to explore new, open, and easily accessible publishing methods.

This year, the authors recognition event will celebrate the publication of more than 70 books and nearly 60 open access articles supported by the Subvention Fund.

With authors from every college, this year’s books and articles cover a wide variety of topics, including medical science, sociology, and creative literary works. Many authors partnered with other researchers from universities around the world, including Virginia Tech alumni, on these publications.

The event is sponsored by the University Libraries in partnership with the Office of the Executive Vice President and Provost, the Office of the Vice President for Research and Innovation, and the Phi Beta Kappa Mu of Virginia chapter.
