Melanie Prusakowski has been named assistant dean for admissions at the Virginia Tech Carilion School of Medicine.
Prusakowski holds a number of positions with the school and with Carilion Clinic. In addition to serving as director of pediatric emergency education for Carilion Clinic, associate chief of emergency services for Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital, and assistant residency director for the Virginia Tech Carilion Clinic Department of Emergency Medicine, she is assistant clerkship director in emergency medicine and holds co-appointments as associate professor of both emergency medicine and pediatrics for the medical school.
“Melanie’s involvement with our school is extensive," said Cynda Johnson, dean of the Virginia Tech Carilion School of Medicine. "From the start, she has been helping us in every way possible as a teacher and mentor to our students and as a member of the admissions committee since 2014. She is highly regarded for her skills both as a clinician and a teacher.”
Prusakowski has been named Emergency Medicine Faculty Member of the Year two years in a row by the graduating classes at the medical school and is a member of the prestigious Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society.
“Melanie is already very familiar with our school and our students," Johnson said. "The next few months will give her an opportunity to build out her new role gradually.”
Prusakowski is a graduate of the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey — Robert Wood Johnson Medical School, where she also completed her residency in pediatrics. She completed a fellowship in pediatric emergency medicine at The Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia.
The Virginia Tech Carilion School of Medicine and Research Institute joins the basic science, life science, bioinformatics, and engineering strengths of Virginia Tech with the medical practice and medical education experience of Carilion Clinic. Virginia Tech Carilion is located in a new biomedical health sciences campus in Roanoke at 2 Riverside Circle.
