Kirk Wehner, director of compensation and performance management, has been named interim assistant vice president for Virginia Tech's Department of Human Resources.

Wehner will oversee all units within the Department of Human Resources including benefits, employee administration, the HR service center, Hokie wellness, staffing and recruiting, compensation, and employee relations. He will be responsible for advancing Virginia Tech’s human resources priorities and initiatives throughout the university, as well as at the state and national levels.

Wehner will serve in the interim leadership role until a national search is completed.

Wehner began his career at Virginia Tech in 2005 as compensation manager within the Department of Human resources. He has been in his current role as the director of compensation and performance management since 2009. In this role, he is responsible for all compensation and performance management functions including performing job evaluations, establishing market rates for jobs, and working with other departments to design and implement award programs.

Prior to officially joining Virginia Tech, Wehner worked with the university as well as other corporations such as Amazon.com and Microsoft on a variety of compensation and performance management projects through his company, KBW LLC.

He also has experience working as an international compensation and benefits manager for Microsoft Corporation, the Coca-Cola Company, and PepsiCo.

He earned a bachelor’s degree in geography from the University of Vermont and is a certified compensation professional (CCP).
