John Duke honored with emeritus status
John Duke, professor of biomedical engineering and mechanics in the College of Engineering at Virginia Tech, has been conferred the title of professor emeritus by the Virginia Tech Board of Visitors.
The emeritus title may be conferred on retired professors, associate professors, and administrative officers who are specially recommended to the board by Virginia Tech President Timothy D. Sands. Nominated individuals who are approved by the board receive an emeritus certificate from the university.
A member of the university community since 1978, Duke made significant contributions to the understanding of how solid materials deteriorate in typical service environments.
Duke was appointed as a Fellow in the American Society of Mechanical Engineers in 2005 and Fellow in the American Society for Nondestructive Testing in 1988.
He was named editor-in-chief of Research in Nondestructive Evaluation in 2007.
In the classroom, Duke taught both undergraduate and graduate courses ranging across the full mechanics curriculum. He advised several students on master's degree theses and doctoral dissertations and helped his students develop successful careers in both academic and industrial settings.
Duke received his bachelor's degree, master's degree, and Ph.D. from Johns Hopkins University.
