Martin Day, professor of mathematics in the College of Science at Virginia Tech, has been conferred the title of professor emeritus by the Virginia Tech Board of Visitors.

The emeritus title may be conferred on retired professors, associate professors, and administrative officers who are specially recommended to the board by Virginia Tech President Tim Sands. Nominated individuals who are approved by the board receive an emeritus certificate from the university.

A member of the university community since 1980, Day made significant research contributions in probability and stochastic processes, with applications to control theory.

In the classroom, Day was an award-winning teacher, appreciated by students for his thorough, patient instruction, and appreciated by colleagues for his insightful contributions to curriculum development. He frequently served as a graduate student advisor, supervising four Ph.D. students.

Day served as director of the graduate program in mathematics from 1995 until 1997 and as chair of the undergraduate program committee from 2010 until 2013.

Day received his bachelor’s degree from California State University at Hayward and his master’s degree and Ph.D. from the University of Colorado.
