Matt Buczynski has been named as an assistant professor in the School of Neuroscience at Virginia Tech, part of the College of Science.

Buczynski earned a bachelor of science in chemistry from the University of Michigan in 2001 and a doctoral degree in biochemistry from University of San Diego, California, in 2008. He previously served as postdoctoral researcher at Scripps Research Institute from 2009 to 2016.

He seeks to identify novel molecular changes caused by drug addiction exposure and validate their functional role in neurological disorders. His research melds advanced mass spectrometry platforms with such practices as chemical biology, molecular biology, in-vivo microdialysis, and animal behavioral modeling.

Buczynski is one of 18 tenured and tenure-track faculty members to join the College of Science and the new School of Neuroscience at Virginia Tech this year. He also is an affiiated faculty member of the Virginia Tech Center for Drug Discovery, part of the Fralin Life Science Institute.
