Editor's note: The following is an open letter to Virginia Tech employees from Kevin L. Foust, chief of police and director of security. Foust is the honorary chair of the 2016 Commonwealth of Virginia Campaign.

Dear colleagues,

The Ut Prosim (That I May Serve) spirit of employees here at Virginia Tech never ceases to amaze me. When there is a call to action, you answer it with open hearts and open arms.

Today, as we enter this season of giving, I am asking each and every one of you to once again rise to the occasion and support the Commonwealth of Virginia Campaign (CVC).

Since September, 1,155 of our employees have answered the call and raised more than $277,000. However, with only one week left in the campaign we still need about $48,000 to reach our $325,000 goal.

But giving to the Commonwealth of Virginia Campaign goes beyond helping Virginia Tech meet its goal.

By supporting the campaign, you are providing meals for the hungry, shelter for the homeless, and school supplies for children. By supporting the campaign, you are helping an adult learn to read, a stray animal find a home, and a family stay on their feet. By supporting the campaign, you are supporting your friends, neighbors, and colleagues who are in need.

And, if you already donate to charity during the holiday season, you can still give to the organization(s) you usually do and also have the gift count towards the campaign.

With more than 1,000 local, statewide, and national charities to choose from, you can easily find a worthy cause to support. Chances are the organization you already support is on the list.

If you haven’t already done so, please consider making a donation today. Every gift, no matter how big or small, will help someone in need.

With your help, we can truly make a difference in our local and global community.
