Elizabeth Mitchell has been appointed assistant dean of advancement for the Pamplin College of Business.

Mitchell is a senior advancement professional with 25 years of comprehensive experience in higher education, including campaign environments.

Her areas of expertise include executive management, strategic planning, staffing university and college leadership domestically and internationally, principal and major gifts, planned giving, corporate relations, annual fund, alumni relations, academic center development, faculty-development relationships, and senior volunteer management.

Mitchell previously served as the assistant vice president of the George Washington University School of Business. During her five years there, she contributed significantly to the funds raised and expanded the program.  Before joining George Washington, she was director of external relations at the Robert H. Smith School of Business at the University of Maryland, where she worked for six years.

She has also held development positions at Wheaton College (Massachusetts), Johns Hopkins University School of Advanced International Studies, and Harvard Law School.

Mitchell was nominated to participate in Higher Education Resource Services the prestigious executive education institute for emerging women leaders in higher education. She is a member of The Quorum Initiative, a professional women’s leadership network for women working in business, education, and government, with chapters in New York; Washington, D.C.; and London.

She received a master’s in divinity from Harvard Divinity School, completing a self-designed program in nonprofit management, business ethics, and philanthropy, and a bachelor’s in government/international relations and religion from Smith College.

Mitchell is the college’s first assistant dean of advancement, a newly created role. A member of the dean’s senior management team, she will oversee development, alumni relations, and communications programs to elevate philanthropic support for Pamplin, its engagement with alumni and other constituents, and its strategic communications.

“Elizabeth will help us take Pamplin to the next level of achievement and impact by coalescing our strategic priorities in business analytics, innovation through entrepreneurship, and sustainable global prosperity with a vigorous advancement program,” said Pamplin dean Robert Sumichrast.

“Elizabeth’s strong track record of running large business school development and alumni relations programs will serve Virginia Tech well, as we continue to integrate the advancement model into Pamplin and the other colleges and units,” said Mike Moyer, associate vice president of development for colleges.
