When students return to campus for the start of the fall 2017 semester in August, there will be two fewer buildings on campus.

Starting in May, construction crews will begin razing Thomas Hall and Monteith Hall,  signaling the final phase of the major redesign of the Upper Quad.

The Upper Quad precinct is home to several academic and administrative buildings and functions as the heart of operations for the Virginia Tech Corps of Cadets. It has been under construction since 2013, when Rasche and Brodie halls were demolished as part of a multifaceted project to build two new residence halls to house more than 1,100 cadets.

  • Rasche Hall was replaced in 2015 with the opening of Pearson Hall
  • Brodie Hall’s replacement, New Cadet Hall, will open in August at the start of the 2017-18 academic year.

Thomas Hall and Monteith Hall each house about 180 cadets. Both buildings were built in 1949 and renovated in the early 1970s.

The area will become green space for the near future.

The entire Upper Quad renovation is estimated at $91 million. The construction manager for the project is Barton Malow Company.

The final component is the Virginia Tech Board of Visitors-approved Corps Leadership and Military Science Building, which will be placed at the rear of Shank’s Plain.

Also as part of the project, Lane Hall, a symbol of the university’s early history and the corps’ proud traditions, has been preserved and placed on the National Registry of Historic Sites.
