The Pamplin College of Business student-run ad agency PRISM has received two 2017 Telly Awards for a video promoting a major initiative of the college.

The video features the proposed Business Learning Community, an initial effort to expand Pamplin’s physical space and develop innovative program offerings. The initiative has since been revised and is now known as the Global Business and Analytics Complex.

PRISM won bronze awards in two categories, competing against professionals from schools, colleges, or universities for commercials/marketing in the first category and against other students in the second category.

Founded in 1979, the Telly Awards honor outstanding local, regional, and cable TV commercials and programs; video and film productions; and online commercials, video, and films.

With more than 13,000 submissions this past year, this award is an honor for PRISM, said its faculty advisor and Pamplin marketing director Donna Wertalik.

“These awards are a testament to the incredible work we have done and will continue to do to change the world and act as a force for clear communication in an engaging manner that is tracked for relevancy,” said Wertalik.

Daniel Mun, of Centreville, Virginia, and a member of PRISM since his freshman year, was a senior in management last year when he spearheaded the video, conducting ideation, filming, and post-production.

“It feels very unreal that we, as a team of college students, were given the opportunity to create a video to foster awareness and support among alumni, donors, students, and the community for Pamplin’s new initiative,” said Mun, who graduated last December.

The proposed Global Business and Analytics Complex is a $250 million, four-building project that will be Pamplin’s new home as well as a base for broader university programs related to data analytics and decision making. It will provide an unsurpassed environment for collaborative education and research.

The complex’s two academic buildings will have advanced visualization and connective technologies and high-performing computing to foster transdisciplinary research among faculty members connected to data analytics and decision sciences, one of Virginia Tech’s major strategic priorities.

The complex’s two living-learning communities will allow learning to extend beyond the classroom. There, up to 700 students will participate in interdisciplinary projects on international business and analytics as part of their residential experience.

Noting PRISM’s increasing work for Pamplin, Cody Davis, of Gloucester, Virginia, a senior in multimedia journalism and PRISM’s current chief marketing officer, said, “Dean Robert Sumichrast’s plans for the new complex open the door to numerous possibilities for PRISM, and I am very excited about that. It’s a better time to be a PRISMite than ever before.”

The two awards bring to three the number of Tellys for PRISM, which won its first one in 2016 for its “Welcome to Hokie Nation” video, designed to encourage high-school students to accept their offer to Pamplin.
