Luisa Havens, currently the vice president for enrollment management and services at Florida International University, has been named vice provost for enrollment management at Virginia Tech, effective Aug. 1.

She will succeed Wanda Hankins Dean, who will retire as vice provost for enrollment and degree management this month.

In her new position, Havens will be responsible for developing, articulating, and implementing a dynamic and predictive enrollment management plan that aligns with the university’s strategic plan. Reporting to Executive Vice President and Provost Thanassis Rikakis, Havens will assume broad leadership within the university, serving as thought partner to the deans of the university’s colleges and schools and providing the vision, analysis, and strategy to optimize Virginia Tech’s current and future enrollment.

“Dr. Havens’ depth of analytic and technological approaches to enrollment management and her demonstrated commitment to the values of diversity and inclusion will help advance Virginia Tech as a global land-grant institution and apply its university motto, Ut Prosim (That I May Serve), to meet the needs of a rapidly changing world,” Rikakis said.

“Virginia Tech’s commitment to service, bold approach to inclusion, and ambitious plan to refocus and reimagine its teaching and research will create wonderful opportunities for future undergraduate and graduate students,” said Havens. “I look forward to building strong and collaborative relationships with colleagues across the university and colleges to develop a strategic and targeted enrollment management plan.”

Virginia Tech has launched an enrollment growth plan that aims to bring total undergraduate enrollment to 30,000 students and graduate enrollment to 10,000 students to Blacksburg, Roanoke, and the metropolitan Washington, D.C., region by 2022.

Havens will lead strategic efforts in service of both incoming undergraduate students and student retention. She will oversee the offices of Undergraduate Admissions, Scholarships and Financial Aid, University Registrar, and Summer and Winter Sessions, and the College Access Collaborative.

In addition, she will collaborate with the academic deans and the dean of the Graduate School on graduate enrollment with the goal of bringing an integrated and data-driven approach to enrollment planning and recruiting strategies for Virginia Tech’s graduate degrees.

Havens has served as vice president for enrollment management and services at Florida International University since 2012. Prior to that position, she was executive director for enrollment services and director of admissions and recruitment at the University of Texas, El Paso from 2007-2012, and registrar and director of admissions at Texas A&M, Kingsville from 2006 to 2007. She held several positions in the Undergraduate Admissions Office at the University of Idaho from 2000 to 2005 and began her career in the Office of New Student Services at the University of Idaho in 1997.

Havens is a member of the American Association of Collegiate Registrars and Admissions Officers, the National Association of Foreign Student Advisors, the National Association of College Admissions Counselors, the National Association of Student Financial Aid Administrators, the National Association of College and University Business Officers, and the National Association of Graduate Admissions Professionals.

Havens received her Ph.D. in educational administration from the University of Idaho, where she also received her bachelor’s and master’s degrees.
