As students return to Blacksburg, Virginia Tech prepares for the start of the fall semester.  

Housing and Residence Life

First-year and returning students who will live on campus can move into residence halls beginning Wednesday, Aug. 23. The final day for residence hall check-in is Saturday, Aug. 26. Check-in begins at 8 a.m. and ends at 5 p.m. each day.

Hokie Helpers will be available to assist with move-in Wednesday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Saturday from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Dining Services

Select dining centers open Monday, Aug. 21 and dining plans go into effect Wednesday, Aug. 23 at 7 a.m. All dining centers will open with regular semester hours beginning Monday, Aug. 28.

Over the summer, JP’s Chop House and The Fighting Gobbler Sports Bar at West End Market underwent renovations to create a better guest experience. In addition, extended grab-and-go offerings were added to West End’s dining options.

Extended hours are in place for both West End Market and Qdoba in Turner Place at Lavery Hall to accommodate the incoming class.

  • Dinner hours at West End extend to 9 p.m. on Sunday through Thursday nights.
  • Qdoba at Turner Place now offers breakfast options from 7:30 to 10 a.m., Monday through Friday.

Tapingo, an app available on both the App Store or Google Play, will allow students to order food from Virginia Tech dining centers online.

Recreational Sports

McComas Hall and War Memorial Hall will both be open throughout move-in.

  • Thursday, Aug. 24: noon to 11:30 p.m.
  • Friday, Aug. 25: noon to 11:30 p.m.

Regular fall hours begin on Saturday, Aug. 26.

    • Saturday: 10 a.m. to 10 p.m.
    • Sunday: noon to 11:30 p.m.
  • War Memorial Hall
    • Monday through Friday: 5:30 a.m. to 11:30 p.m.
    • Saturday: 9 a.m. to 11 p.m.
    • Sunday: noon to 9 p.m.

Free Week of Fitness will take place from Aug. 28 to Sept. 3. Any group exercise, small group training, or dance format class is free to try. Refer to the Rec Sports website for a full schedule of these opportunities.

Visit McComas Hall or War Memorial Hall after 5 p.m. the first week of classes to learn about all the areas of Rec Sports.

Intramural sports registration opens on Aug. 28 for 9-on-9 soccer, fantasy football, putt-putt, 8-ball singles, and sand volleyball doubles. To register for a sport, a student must first purchase a $20 intramural membership, which allows access to register for any sport throughout the year.

Registration for fall trips with Venture Out opened at the beginning of August. These trips include rock climbing, canoeing, horseback riding, hiking, backpacking, stand-up paddle boarding, whitewater rafting, mountain biking, and caving. Students can also rent equipment, such as tents, sleeping bags, and backpacks, to venture out on their own outdoor trips. Venture Out is located at 205 W. Roanoke St.

Schiffert Health Center

Schiffert Health Center resumes regular hours on Monday, Aug. 21, for the Corps of Cadets, and on Monday, Aug. 28, for all Virginia Tech students who have paid their health fee. Schiffert Health Center is open weekdays from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. and on Saturdays from 9 a.m. to noon for urgent care only.

Cook Counseling Center

Cook Counseling Center maintains regular business hours year-round. The center is open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Thursday, and 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Fridays.

University Libraries

Newman Library will return to its regular “24/5” hours beginning Sunday, Aug. 28, at 9 a.m. The library will be closed on Monday, Sept. 4, to honor Labor Day.

Student centers on campus have varying hours of operation throughout move-in.

Squires Student Center

Johnston Student Center

  • Wednesday, Aug. 23 to Friday, Aug. 25: 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
  • Saturday, Aug. 26 and Sunday, Aug. 27: closed

Graduate Life Center

  • Wednesday, Aug. 23, to Friday, Aug. 25: 7:30 a.m. to 8 p.m.
  • Saturday, Aug. 26 and Sunday, Aug. 27: closed

University Bookstores

The on-campus University Bookstore and off-campus Volume Two Bookstore offer regular and extended hours as students prepare for fall semester. Visit the Virginia Tech Services website for store hours information.

Blacksburg Transit

Blacksburg Transit returns to full service operation on Saturday, Aug. 26. Refer to the Blacksburg Transit website for additional schedule information, including service changes that will impact bus routes and schedules this fall.

Hokie Hi

Hokie Hi at Virginia Tech is a series of events and Hokie traditions designed to welcome you back to campus and to continue preparing you for success in and out of the classroom.
