David Guerin, executive director of university communications at Louisiana Tech University, has been named associate vice provost for communications at Virginia Tech. He will begin on Sept. 1.

In this new role, Guerin will work with the academic vice provost and vice president units in the Office of the Provost to direct and implement a comprehensive, integrated communications program. He will articulate and guide the implementation of communications strategies and tactics relevant to graduate and undergraduate recruitment, faculty recruitment, inclusion and diversity, outreach and international affairs, student life, and university initiatives related to Destination Areas and the National Capital Region.

Guerin will report to the Executive Vice President and Provost Thanassis Rikakis and Senior Associate Vice President for University Relations Tracy Vosburgh.

“Dave is joining us at a critical time at the university, as we increase our work in Destination Areas, inclusion and diversity, and student enrollment and recruitment,” said Rikakis. “Essential for success will be effective and aligned communications that reach our many stakeholders—current and future students and faculty, as well as business and industry, academic partners, and alumni and friends who seek to work with Virginia Tech on the most pressing issues that face society today. Dave’s depth of experience and collaborative approach will help us significantly.”

At Louisiana Tech since 2006, Guerin served as the university’s chief marketing and communications officer and directed all external and internal institutional marketing; print and web/social media engagement and communications; and media and community relations strategies. He also oversaw the university’s branding and licensing programs and athletic communications.

Prior to working at Louisiana Tech, Guerin served as campus director at Nova Southeastern University in Las Vegas from 2003 to 2006; program director at WTIS-AM/Westshore Broadcasting in St. Petersburg, Florida, from 1997 to 2003; and production and program director at WSOS-FM/Westshore Broadcasting in St. Augustine, Florida. He also served in the U.S. Army for eight years.

Guerin received his bachelor’s degree from Eckerd College in St. Petersburg, Florida, an M.B.A. from the University of Tampa, and an Ed.D. from Nova Southeastern University in Fort Lauderdale, Florida.
