Known for traversing the depth and breadth of musical possibilities in the world of percussion, Chicago-based Third Coast Percussion brings an energetic and unique approach to music with the performance “Lyrical Geometry” at the Moss Arts Center on Oct. 6 at 7:30 p.m.

The performance will be held in the center’s Anne and Ellen Fife Theatre, located within the Street and Davis Performance Hall at 190 Alumni Mall.

The artist-run quartet of classically trained musicians has forged a unique path in the musical landscape with virtuosic, lively performances that celebrate the musical possibilities of percussion. “Lyrical Geometry” highlights the ensemble’s most recent creations, including music from their Grammy-winning 2016 album of American composer Steve Reich’s work.

The performance will also feature a new work, “Wild Sound,” written for the ensemble by acclaimed composer Glenn Kotche, percussionist for the band Wilco, as well as original pieces composed by Third Coast Percussion members.

This performance is supported in part by a gift from CY and Carole Davis.

The Moss Arts Center and Third Coast Percussion will present a free school-day performance, “Third Coast Percussion: Think Outside the Drum,” for area children in pre-kindergarten through sixth grade. The performance will introduce students to the building blocks of music through participation in a series of interactive activities. They will learn about the extraordinary range of percussion instruments that can be found in cultures around the world, as well as in their own kitchen cabinets.

The ensemble will also lead a free workshop for students in third through sixth grades. WAVES (wonder, arts, vibration, engineering, science) is an interactive educational presentation exploring the scientific and musical properties of sound waves. The members of Third Coast Percussion will perform music, teach students about sound waves using app-based technology and video projections, and share custom-designed percussion instruments with all audience members. The students will then have the opportunity to perform a piece of music with Third Coast Percussion.
