Eric McCollum honored with emeritus status

Eric McCollum, professor of human development in the College of Liberal Arts and Human Sciences at Virginia Tech, has been conferred the title of professor emeritus by the Virginia Tech Board of Visitors.

The emeritus title may be conferred on retired professors, associate professors, and administrative officers who are specially recommended to the board by Virginia Tech President Tim Sands. Nominated individuals who are approved by the board receive an emeritus certificate from the university.

A member of the university community at the Falls Church location in the National Capital Region since 1992, McCollum contributed to the field of marriage and family therapy through his teaching, scholarship, and clinical work on substance abuse, domestic violence, and mindfulness meditation. He was the principal and co-investigator on grants and contracts implementing and assessing the effectiveness of intervention programs for substance abuse, domestic violence, and at-risk families and children.

McCollum served the field of marriage and family therapy as a clinical supervisor, receiving the American Association for Marriage and Family Therapy Training Award for his work. He was a member of the Virginia Board for Counseling and a contributing member of several therapy­-related professional associations and editorial boards.

In the classroom, McCollum taught a variety of graduate courses on marriage and family therapy models and techniques, domestic violence, substance abuse, ethics, and mindfulness. He served as the clinical director and program director of the marriage and family therapy master’s program in the National Capital Region.

McCollum received his bachelor’s degree and master’s degree from the University of Iowa and a Ph.D. from Kansas State University.
