Student and local musicians share their music with the community during Virginia Tech Music Day. Organized by Virginia Tech students, this third annual event will feature over 20 musicians performing in various outdoor locations throughout campus on Friday, April 13, from 10 a.m. until 7 p.m.

Organized by the Moss Arts Center Student Ambassadors, a student group that represents the center and helps promote its events to other students, the event is designed to celebrate the music-making of area performers and share their sounds with the university community.

With the motto “Ut Musica Faciam” (That I May Make Music), Virginia Tech Music Day began in 2016 under the leadership of student Emily Barritt, a current junior neuroscience and chemistry major, member of the Honors College, Moss Arts Center ambassador, and musician who plays bassoon with the New River Valley Symphony Orchestra.

Barritt developed the concept for Music Day with Virginia Tech chemistry professor Gordon Yee, who described a similar event he had attended at another university in his introductory chemistry class offered through the Honors College. Barritt took the lead and, with help from her fellow Moss Arts Center ambassadors, coordinated the first Virginia Tech Music Day two years ago. She spearheaded efforts to recruit student and community musicians, identify key outdoor spaces across campus for performances, and schedule performances in each of the areas throughout the day.

A different Moss Arts Center ambassador leads Music Day each year. This year, the event leader is Jamie Lindsay, a senior majoring in theater arts and public relations.
