Vinod Lohani, professor of engineering education in the College of Engineering and director of education and global initiatives in the Institute for Critical Technology and Applied Science at Virginia Tech, has been named the W.S. "Pete White Chair for Innovation in Engineering Education by the Virginia Tech Board of Visitors.
The W.S. “Pete” White Chair for Innovation in Engineering Education was established by American Electric Power to honor Pete White, a 1948 graduate of Virginia Tech, and to encourage new interest in the teaching of engineering and improve the learning process. Recipients hold the chair for a period of two years.
A member of the Virginia Tech faculty since 1998, Lohani has impacted hundreds of students across the College of Engineering through innovative teaching methods based on interactive classroom instruction technologies combined with hands on learning experiences. His 16 National Science Foundation-funded projects totaling $6.4 million has supported this innovative work.
Lohani established the Learning Enhanced Watershed Assessment System Lab at Virginia Tech, which conducts sophisticated water quality and weather monitoring on campus in real-time. Students who are able to access data through an interactive database are able to engage in exciting work in environmental and engineering education. His lab is used by students across the college and has been utilized in more than 26 courses at Virginia Tech and supports a growing number of graduate research projects.
As director for education and global initiatives at the Institute for Critical Technology and Applied Science, Lohani has expanded the impact of his work and has developed new applications at the K-12 level.
As a result of this work, Lohani received Virginia Tech’s Scholarship of Teaching and Learning Award in 2013.
Lohani received his bachelor's degree from Govind Ballabh Pant University of Agriculture and Technology in Pantnagar, India; a master's degree from Asian Institute of Technology in Bangkok, Thailand; and a Ph.D. from Virginia Tech.
