Idris Adjerid has been appointed associate professor in the Department of Business Information Technology at Virginia Tech’s Pamplin College of Business.

He is one of nine new, full-time, tenured or tenure-track faculty members at Pamplin this fall. Their addition reflects the college’s commitment to hiring faculty to further strengthen its teaching, research, and business outreach, particularly in areas concerning business analytics, innovation and entrepreneurship, and sustainable global prosperity.

Adjerid received his Ph.D. in information systems and management from Carnegie Mellon University in 2013. He earned an MBA and a bachelor’s degree in business information technology from Virginia Tech.

Adjerid was hired as part of the effort to strengthen Virginia Tech's faculty expertise in integrated security. His research interests are privacy and security, health information technology and health information exchanges, and health care analytics.

His research uses econometric methods as well as lab and field experiments and consists of two, often overlapping, streams. The first stream focuses on the economics of privacy, with a focus on the intersection of behavioral economics and privacy decision-making. The second stream focuses on the economics of health care technologies.

His research has been published in leading journals, including Management Science, Information Systems Research, MIS Quarterly, American Psychologist, and ACM Computing Surveys.

Adjerid will be teaching Fair Data, a special-study course in the fall semester on issues in privacy, the ethical use of data, automated decisions, and algorithmic fairness. He is designing a new course, Security Analytics, to be taught in the spring semester.

Adjerid was previously an assistant professor at the University of Notre Dame, where he received awards and grants for his teaching and research. He started his professional career at the Government Accountability Office, working as a senior technology analyst.

His work and expert commentary have been cited by numerous outlets in the popular press, including The New York Times, the Wall Street Journal, the Washington Post, Wired, Politico, and USA Today.
