More than 60 percent of the Virginia Tech community utilizes alternative means of transportation, such as biking, walking, transit, and carpool. Virginia Tech has also been designated as a Bronze-Level Bicycle Friendly University by the League of American Bicyclists every year since 2013.

On Sept. 19 from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m., the Alternative Transportation Department will host its annual Active Commute Celebration at Squires Plaza. Held during Sustainability Week, the Active Commute Celebration recognizes the growing community of campus members who opt to bike, bus, walk, carpool, or vanpool to and from campus.

The celebration also offers an opportunity for the Virginia Tech community to learn more about available alternative transportation options around campus. Participating organizations include:

  • Blacksburg Police
  • Blacksburg Transit
  • Hokie Bike Hub
  • Hokie Wellness
  • Office of Sustainability
  • RIDE Solutions
  • Roam NRV
  • Sustainable Blacksburg
  • Virginia Tech Alternative Transportation
  • Virginia Tech Parking Services
  • Virginia Tech Police
  • Virginia Tech Environmental Coalition

This year’s event will be held in support of the Heads Up Hokies campaign, which encourages Hokies and community members traveling across campus on foot, bike, by bus, or car to stay alert and pay attention to their surroundings.

The event will also include fun giveaways, free breakfast, and snacks.
