From a friendly “good morning,” to a fresh pot of coffee already brewing before an early meeting, Virginia Tech Housekeeper Susan Hypes knows it is the little things that can make all the difference in starting off the day right.

Hypes works tirelessly to ensure all faculty, staff, students, and visitors alike receive a warm welcome and attractive, clean surroundings as they enter Cheatham Hall, home of the College of Natural Resources and Environment.

Hypes, a housekeeper at Virginia Tech since March 2017, has been chosen as 2018 Facilities Department Employee of the Year. Hypes was picked from among 12 facilities employees who were recognized as Employees of the Month between July 2017 and June 2018. There are more than 400 employees in the Facilities Department who are eligible for the award.

Personable, proactive, compassionate, and integral are all attributes colleagues use to describe Hypes. These descriptors underscore all of Hypes’ daily efforts to ensure Cheatham Hall is immaculate. From cleaning windows, to vacuuming entry rugs, and helping to set up for meetings, Hypes goes above and beyond her housekeeping duties with a sense of pride – and without being asked.

“Susan considers the condition of our building a reflection of her work, and the faculty, staff, and students who work in Cheatham Hall have grown accustomed to Susan’s conscientious and high standards,” shared a colleague in a nomination letter.

When asked about her favorite parts of the job, Hypes highlighted the familial atmosphere in Cheatham Hall and the opportunity to interact with students, faculty, staff, and visitors on a daily basis. She even strives to learn as many names as she can so she can greet everyone by name.

Hypes credits her recognition to the support she has received from family as well as colleagues in the College of Natural Resources and Environment. She also cites the impact of the mentoring and friendship she has received from fellow Cheatham Hall housekeeper Michael Calfee, winner of the 2016 Facilities Department Employee of the Year.

“Susan is more than just our housekeeper, she is our colleague and friend. She is an integral part of our team and supports us with the best of her care,” said Candice Albert, director of administration and finance for the College of Natural Resources and Environment. “Whether it is her daily duties or working with us on special events in the building, we always know that Susan is providing us with the best service. We are fortunate to have her as part of our Cheatham Hall family.”

Facilities associate vice president and chief facilities officer Chris Kiwus presented Hypes with a plaque and $1,000 check at the department’s annual summer picnic.
