Biking is an environmentally friendly and convenient way to get around both on campus and off campus. Virginia Tech Police Department and the Office of Parking and Transportation share 10 important reminders below for ensuring bike safety and security.

Bike safety reminders:

1. Always wear a helmet.

2. Biking during class change times: According to university policy, in times of heavy pedestrian traffic when sidewalks and pathways are congested (such as class change), bicyclists must dismount and walk.

3. Crosswalks: Bicyclists are encouraged to dismount at crosswalks.

4. Always use proper hand signaling.

5. Always be aware of your surroundings: Traffic and pedestrian foot traffic can change at any moment. Please be aware while riding a bike. Do not wear headphones or use a cellphone while riding.

6. Bike use on sidewalks is prohibited in some areas of downtown Blacksburg.

Bike security and theft prevention:

7. Register your bike: All bikes on-campus must be registered with the Office of Parking and Transportation. Bike registration prevents theft and assists with the recovery of stolen bikes. Failure to register can result in fines or impoundment of the bike. To register your bike for free, use the Parking Services Bicycle Registration form.

8. Lock your bike: Always lock your bike with a strong U-lock (not a cable lock that can be cut easily) at a designated bike rack — even if it is only going to be on the rack for a few minutes.

9. Do not lock your bike to a sign, pole, or railing or you risk your bike being impounded. All bikes must be parked in designated bike racks. If a parked bike impedes a walkway, entrance, or access point, it will be impounded.

10. If your bike is stolen, please report it to Virginia Tech Police by calling 540-382-4343 or by filling out this form.
