Yuriko Renardy, a professor in the Department of Mathematics in the College of Science at Virginia Tech, has been conferred the title of Class of 1950 Professor Emerita of Mathematics by the Virginia Tech Board of Visitors.

The emeritus title may be conferred on retired professors, associate professors, and administrative officers who are specially recommended to the board by Virginia Tech President Tim Sands in recognition of exemplary service to the university. Nominated individuals who are approved by the board receive a copy of the resolution and a certificate of appreciation.

A member of the Virginia Tech community since 1986, Renardy brought international visibility to the university through her research in fluid mechanics, a field in which mathematical analysis and computation are combined to address problems associated with blood flow, polymer manufacturing, and other processes fundamental to human health and environmental quality.

She was the principal or co-principal investigator on more than 30 grants totaling more than $1.6 million. She was the author or co-author of more than 140 peer-reviewed journal articles, book chapters, news articles, and reviews, and two books.

Renardy held leadership positions in several professional organizations, including the American Institute of Chemical Engineers and the American Physical Society Division of Fluid Dynamics. She served as associate editor and editorial board member for several academic journals.

Renardy is a Fellow in the Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics, the Institute of Mathematics and its Applications (United Kingdom), and the American Physical Society. She has served on selection committees for scientific prizes and fellowships and the Committee of Visitors for the National Science Foundation.

In the classroom, Renardy taught and lectured in both undergraduate and graduate courses and served on more than 40 master’s degree and doctoral dissertation committees.

Renardy earned her bachelor’s degree from Australian National University and a Ph.D. from University of Western Australia.
