Students who are planning to travel for the upcoming Thanksgiving and winter breaks are encouraged to take advantage of the following transportation options available through Parking and Transportation Services.

Around Blacksburg and the local area:

  • Blacksburg Transit: Blacksburg Transit (BT) has 50 buses that serve 13 routes in Blacksburg and Christiansburg. Passengers can also use BT to make connections to other bus lines, with service to Radford, Roanoke, and Washington, D.C. BT is free to students who present their Hokie Passport.
  • Smart Way: The Smart Way bus is a commuter service that provides transportation between Squires Student Center and the Roanoke Valley for $4 each way. This shuttle can be used to connect to the Roanoke Amtrak platform as well as the Roanoke Regional Monday through Saturday. Smart Way offers a special transfer option to allow travelers returning to the airport on a Sunday to use the Roanoke/Blacksburg Airport Shuttle for $4. Monthly passes are available to Virginia Tech faculty, staff, and students for 25 percent off the normal price.
  • Zimride: Zimride’s Virginia Tech carpooling board allows users to post in search of rides or to offer rides of their own and provides the opportunity to exchange money through PayPal on their secure platform.


Around Virginia and beyond:

  • Campus Connect Bus: Virginia Tech’s Campus Connect Bus provides employees, students, and their guests with safe and convenient transportation between the university's campuses in the Blacksburg/Roanoke and Ballston/Arlington, Va. areas. Students and employees (with a PID) are eligible to purchase tickets online.
  • Roanoke-Blacksburg Regional Airport: Roanoke-Blacksburg Regional Airport (ROA) offers daily flights to major U.S. cities, including Charlotte, Chicago, Philadelphia, New York, Atlanta, and Washington, D.C. (Dulles). Students can reach the Roanoke Airport from Squires Student Center by riding the Smart Way bus.
  • Home Ride of Virginia: The Home Ride bus is a private company that provides students with weekend and holiday bus service from Lane Stadium to Northern Virginia, Harrisonburg, Charlottesville, Richmond, and the Tidewater area. Tickets may be purchased at the University Bookstore.
  • Virginia Breeze: The Virginia Breeze bus offers connectivity between Blacksburg and the National Capital region with additional stops in Christiansburg, Lexington, Staunton, Harrisonburg, Front Royal, Dulles Airport, Arlington, and Washington, D.C.
  • Amtrak: Students who would like to ride Amtrak may consider traveling from Blacksburg to the Amtrak station in Roanoke. Check the Smart Way bus schedule for ways to get to the Amtrak platform in downtown Roanoke from the Blacksburg campus.
  • College Transit: College Transit is a bus service that provides students with holiday break transportation between Lane Stadium and metro areas in Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and New York.
