Chevon Thorpe '12 (biochemistry) has been named director of inclusion, diversity, and equity in the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences.

In her new position, Thorpe will provide leadership and serve as the focal point for college diversity and inclusion initiatives. She will engage the college leadership team to support a diverse and inclusive environment by providing guidance and vision for recruiting and retaining diverse and inclusive faculty, staff, undergraduate, and graduate students. She will also identify and respond to areas in need of multicultural engagement.

Thorpe was also named collegiate assistant professor in the college’s Department of Biochemistry. Her goal is to support the department’s instructional mission by directing course changes to update technology and curricula and conducting research on the scholarship of teaching and learning.

For the past five years, Thorpe has worked as an assistant professor in the Edward Via School of Osteopathic Medicine. During this time, she lectured, mentored students, and served as the school’s biochemistry course director, steering efforts to manage and contribute to curriculum review projects.

A native of Newport News, Thorpe received her bachelor’s degree in biology from Christopher Newport University and her doctorate degree in biochemistry from Virginia Tech. She is a member of the National Association of Minority Medical Educators and has served on the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences Dean’s Advisory Council, Mentorship Task Force, and VCOM Admissions Committee.
